Janet Wilhelm of McKinney, TX, was terrified when the accident happened. She was packing up dog food in the garage, placing it into a container, when she slipped.
Wilhelm fell on her left hip, breaking it in five places. Things could have taken a tragic turn if her dog Mabel hadn’t been there. Wilhelm and her husband rescued Mabel three years earlier.
They had no idea the dog was about to repay their kindness.
As Wilhelm lay on the garage floor, she didn’t have a phone or way to get help. She grabbed Mabel’s collar, but the dog reacted peculiarly.
“I grabbed her collar and she started backing up towards the house,” she told USA Today. “I was like, ‘What is she doing? She’s trying to get away from me,’ I thought.”
Little did she know that Mabel was rescuing her. The black Lab was pulling Mabel inch by inch into the home, where the dog knew there was a phone. It took 90 minutes for Mabel to drag Wilhelm 20 feet, but it saved her life.
“I was so happy she was there,” Wilhelm said. “I was like, ‘Good girl, good girl. I love you, I love you.’ I was just so happy.”
Wilhelm was finally able to grab her purse, which had her phone in it. She called her husband. If Mabel hadn’t saved her, she would have been stranded alone for eight hours, which would have gravely affected her recovery.
Dogs are amazing. I must say in a cats defense King Beef, a cat is not strong enough to drag a human but they are capable of going for help if they can get out of the house. I have know of cases where that has happened. Thank God this dog was there for his mom. So happy she is safe and doing well. God bless all.
