A 28-year-old Pennsylvania woman who was arrested on child pornography charges told authorities that she had the photos on her phone as a “coping mechanism” because she had been molested as a child.

According to WPXI-TV, Kaitlin Plascjak of Imperial, Pennsylvania, was arrested following an investigation that began in August after an FBI task force received an anonymous tip.

Authorities discovered “100 images (of child porn), including videos” of “infants, toddlers and preteens exposing themselves.” In addition, police said that Plascjak’s cellphone contained videos of “infants being sexually assaulted.”

When she was taken into custody in November, she was the first woman in Allegheny County to have been arrested for child pornography in 16 years.

Officials said that she admitted to the crime, but said it was a “coping mechanism because she was molested when she was younger.”

The New York Daily News reported that Plasjak faces a minimum of 15 to 30 years in prison on the child pornography charges.

It’s sort of a sad comment on society that any kind of pornography — much less child pornography — could possibly be seen as a coping mechanism for anybody.

However, such is our society. Pornography of all sorts has been used as a drug for decades, exploding with the internet in the 1990s. It’s viewed as socially acceptable — and yet we’ve seen its damaging fingerprints all over the fabric of our culture.

Plasjak is likely to spend a lot of time in prison, as well she should. She should also be kept far away from children, as we hope she will be. She is, however, a broken person, someone who’s been victimized by the cycle of sexual predation and amorality in this society.

Sure, technology had something to do with this explosion. However, permissiveness has also been part of the equation. Until we realize that, we won’t be able to stop individuals like Kaitlin Plascjak from being broken in the first place.
