According to the U.S. Code of Laws regarding how to fly the American flag, “No disrespect should be shown to the flag of the United States of America.”
More specifically, “The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.”
But an upside-down flag flying in West Des Moines, Iowa, was not signaling any danger or distress. It was upside down as part of an ongoing protest regarding the alleged torture of detainees at Guantanamo Bay.
And one Iraq war veteran was having none of it.
As shown in the video here, he had approached the protestors and demanded that the flag be turned right-side up. (NOTE: This video contains profane language.)
The leader of the protestors responds to the veteran with ludicrous statements such as the flag is not sacred but is “an advertising gimmick.”Although the confrontation appears to be headed for a physical altercation, the scene doesn’t go beyond some scuffling, pushing and a lot of profanity-laced yelling by the infuriated veteran.
In retrospect, the veteran should be commended for showing physical restraint as clearly he was trying to hold back from punching out the protestors.
(And we at the Conservative Tribune are pretty sure he could have done it successfully.)
Also note that the veteran makes it clear several times that he is not annoyed by their protest. He respects their right to voice their opinion in a country that guarantees freedom of speech. He is deeply annoyed, however, by their disrespect for the flag (H/T YouTube).
It is refreshing to see that when American symbols, such as the flag, are trashed by those trying to make the point that the United States is misguided, wrong or non-exceptional, there are true patriots, such as the one shown here, who will quickly come to America’s defense.
Despite his salty language, if you are proud of this veteran and his defense of the American flag, please share this video and article on Facebook.
