An off-duty police officer was heading to work one morning when he noticed a frantic couple driving alongside his squad car. Officer Dan Templeton of Elk Grove, CA knew immediately that something wasn’t right.
He had the distressed couple pull into the parking lot of a tire center. Captured on the dash cam, the officer swung the car doors open — and there he saw a woman named Vanessa in the process of giving birth. The baby wasn’t breathing and his head was completely blue; Officer Templeton couldn’t wait for the fire department to arrive. He then threw a blanket onto the concrete and proceeded to help deliver the newborn himself.
In the video below, Officer Templeton goes to the hospital to reunite with the grateful family and meet baby Jesiah, whose life he saved.
As it turned out, it wasn’t police department training that helped him deliver the child, but rather witnessing the birth of his own two sons. “You get choked up, especially because I have kids,” he said. “You know the experience. The first thing I wanted to do was tell my wife, who works here as well. We both teared up a little bit.”
