Pit bulls are commonly feared for their aggressive behavior. Some believe that all pit bull breeds are inherently aggressive and dangerous.
Others feel strongly that a pit bull’s environment and specific owner play much greater roles in the dog’s personality and behavior than genetics alone. Though discussion on pit bulls can often bring about strong feelings and opinions, there is no doubt that the pit bull in this particular story was a hero.
Five-year-old Remayah Hernandez was riding her bike outside with her sister in their Lake Worth, Florida neighborhood. She spotted the neighbor’s Labrador mix dog named Tank.
She approached the dog to pet him. Then, he attacked her, biting her face.
Remayah’s cries for help not only got the attention of her mother but the family dog as well. The family’s pit bull, Trigger, heard the little girl’s cries of fear and pain when he was in the backyard.
He jumped the fence to come to her rescue. Trigger attacked and critically injured Tank.
The family was saving up money to take a special trip to Disney World. However, the cost of the plastic surgery required to treat her after the attack meant that the vacation money would instead be used for medical expenses.
A GoFundMe page was created to help raise money for Remayah to still visit Disney World. The $1,000 goal was met and even exceeded.
Though the attack understandably scared the little girl, she was thankful to have who she has called her “superhero” by her side when she really needed help. Tank’s owner, Nehemias Gaspar, was at work at the time of the attack.
He stated, “I sincerely believe inside of me that my dog is innocent. It’s very unfortunate what happen but I’m more worried about the girl now that my dog is gone.”
Many people have various strong opinions and concerns when it comes to stories involving dogs biting children. At the end of the day, everybody — including the owner of the dog who had to be put down — is thankful that Remayah has recovered from the attack.
