You have to take your hat off to those people who know what they want and just go for it. Especially when they are only 10 years old.
And we’re not talking about wanting a toy or a new PlayStation game and going out and picking it up. We’re talking about something bigger, more personal.
For his 10th birthday this year, Kalani Watson had a special request. Of course he wanted cake and a friend party and some new toys, but he also wanted his stepfather to give him a new name.
Brandon Williams is married to Porsche, Kalani’s mother. The pair met in 2010 and were married in 2012.
From the start, Watson and Williams have had a “traditional” father and son relationship. While they weren’t related, they certainly loved and respected each other, each seeing the other as father or son.
Recently, Watson asked his mother if he could take Williams’ last name. Tearfully, his mother explained what needed to be done for that to happen.
Plans were put into motion. Fathers Day was set as the target for this big moment.
Watson, though, is young and had had enough of keeping this secret. He decided that his birthday would be a fine day to “pop the question.”
On the day of his party, Watson gave Williams a gift. First, he read a beautiful and heartfelt note which was recounted in the Huffington Post:
“Dad, I know today is supposed to be all about me, but today is really about us. So let’s stop playing and make it official. Brandon Craig Williamson, will you do me the biggest favor in the world? Will you adopt me?”
After completing his reading he produced a package. Inside was a blank adoption form!
Williams was of course moved by the action. “Most parents automatically get their child’s love. I had to grind for this,” he said. “I had to show him I’m not going anywhere.”
“So since I have had to work hard for his love I don’t take it for granted. So it was a honor and one of the greatest moments of my life,” he told the Huffington Post.
The family plans to complete the adoption papers soon at the graveside of Williams’ father who recently passed. Let’s offer congratulations to this family so filled with love.
